Serving Fortune Magazine's#2 Company To Work For
WHEN OUR DAUGHTER SOPHIA was attending Binghamton University in New York State, we had our first experience shopping at the Wegmans store in Vestal. Wegmans stores are unlike any other supermarket, anywhere. The stores are all still family owned, and it shows. The variety and quality are outstanding. The stores boast cafes and a tremendous assortment of prepared foods, bakery items and more. We didn’t have a Wegmans anywhere near us in Brooklyn, the nearest stores are in New Jersey.
When I heard that Wegmans was planning to open a location in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, I was determined to be a vendor there. I reached out to them and we arranged to have some people from the corporate offices come visit us in Red Hook and taste our products. We offered them a few muffins, biscotti, pound cakes and pies. They acknowledged our products were delicious and they liked that we have an artisan bakery where things are still done by hand. They promised to be in touch.
Several months went by, I was anxious that perhaps they changed their minds, but they decided to give our products a try in the New Jersey stores. We agreed to start with two stores, and add the remainder incrementally, so we could work out the kinks of production and delivery. There are nine locations in the Garden State, and a few of them are near Philadelphia.
We agreed to have deliveries once a week to whichever locations placed an order and would consolidate the stores into one or two delivery days. Go Express, A neighboring Red Hook business that specializes in delivery service makes sure our products reach their destinations on time and intact.
Now we have thirteen different items in the Wegmans stores. Lemon Meringue pies were added last year. Pumpkin pies, pumpkin pocket tarts and pumpkin loaf cake are especially popular as soon as Labor Day passes and there’s a chill in the air. Wegmans displays our products in a free-standing display in the bakery section, and it fills me with so much pride to see them there. I can’t wait for the Brooklyn Navy Yard store to open, not only to provide our baked goods, but to shop there as well!
